What is Happening to Our Youth?
Today I came home from a speaking engagement and decided to unwind a bit before I started working. Most of the time I don’t pay much attention to the news because it is so negative, but today I made an exception. I decided to watch a video clip from MSN and I was horrified, to say the least. The video clip was about 6 teenage girls who decided to beat up another teenage girl.
Why was I able to view this horrifying scene? Because these girls decided to make a video of the physical abuse so they could post it on YouTube. It was entertainment for them; an opportunity for them to be famous!
This is not the kind of blog post I usually choose to do because there is nothing inspiring about it. But as a coach to moms, I feel it is my duty to warn other mothers as to what is going on out there in this crazy mixed up world. What can we do as mothers for our own children?
Spend as much time with your children as you can. Love them and do everything you can to instill a healthy self-esteem. Let your children know they are valuable. Create a space in your home that enables your kids to talk, talk, talk to you. Know who they are hanging out with. Don’t be afraid to set limits and boundaries on Internet usage. Get inside their hearts and minds. Educate yourself about cyber bullying. It’s real and with all the technology that is available to our youth, it’s not going away.
We have a tough job as mothers raising our children in this day and age. But we can rise to the challenge and create an opportunity to turn our world around by raising a new, wiser, more loving and conscious generation of youth.
